The research entitled What Assures Consumers shows that the Co-operative Group, which as well as food retail, travel, funeral and pharmacy operations includes the Co-operative Bank and Co-operative Insurance (CIS), is trusted more than any other high street operator. The research shows that The Co-operative Group is followed by Marks & Spencer, The Body Shop, John Lewis and Tesco. "Tesco's motto of 'every little helps' appears spot on, but help for whom and in what regard? What's clear is that the Co-op has a much better handle on what consumers consider 'fair to me and fair to others'. Yes, a fair price and customer service are key, but increasingly important too is how these retailers are fair to their own employees or communities near to stores" says Philip Monaghan, a Director at AccountAbility What Assures Consumers research is part of an independent survey undertaken by Globescan in May 2006 for AccountAbility in partnership with the National Consumer Council. The research aims to better understand what assures the public in their decision-making on purchases to build practices that both empower consumers but also strengthen corporate performance. The What Assures Consumers interim findings show that the top ten most trusted companies are as follows; This ranking was based on a 'net trust' rating - that is a 'most trusted' score minus a 'most distrusted' score. As expected, issues such as favourable familiarity, a fair price and product/service quality are fundamentals for trusted companies. Key differentiators in terms of trust for The Co-operative Group related to the environment and treatment of employees Martin Beaumont Chief Executive of the Co-operative Group said: "This research provides further evidence that 'ethical' consumerism, is moving into the mainstream as consumers become more willing to deal with companies based on how responsible they are." | |||
